The simple pleasures of the Bajamar Golf Resort
The
Bajamar Golf Resort offers rare beauty
and drama to even the most experienced golf traveler. Its reputation
as a “little Pebble Beach” creates high expectations
that are well-deserved. While Bajamar is worthy, it isn't world
class... yet. However, a golf course doesn't have to be world-class
to provide golfers with inspiration, a chance to practice, and great
fun.
Bajamar's 6,900 yard layout is extremely balanced in its playability
and features the striking natural beauty of the Baja. Indeed, the
gorgeous surroundings of the ocean holes are almost a distraction.
The fairways have some yellowish spots and can be somewhat firm,
but these small imperfections create a longer drive potential, similar
to playing Colorado's mountain courses.
Golfing at Bajamar is relatively inexpensive. As the resort's owners
have not started reinvesting in the property yet, golfers can take
advantage of this transition period and will find some fabulous
stay and play deals. You can find weekday specials that include
a 1-night stay, 27 holes, breakfast and lunch for about $100 USD.
The three nines at Bajamar are quite distinctive. The Lagos nine
are much like playing golf
in Florida as the holes are flat and feature plenty of water.
For the drier Vista holes there are more elevation changes which
makes it like Arizona golfing.
Bajamar is renowned for its Oceano holes, the first few of which
are par 4s, leading eventually to the ocean. Number 5 of Oceano
is an impressive par 3 (185 yards from tip to tip), and a forced
carry over a cove, with surf crashing onto lava rocks just beneath
the tee box. Quiet days on the green offer golfers the opportunity
to drop an extra couple of practice balls.
Bajamar
doesn't compete with the exclusive resorts
in Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta, but it's not trying to. It's
convenient and affordable, and remains casual enough to be a favorite
destination for travelers from California
and Arizona who seek a quick escape from the daily grind and some
post-round margaritas. The resort features tennis courts and a swimming
pool, and the rooms are finished in Mexican colonial style. If you
don't mind driving to reach the golf course, Ensenada is just 20
minutes away and has lots of accommodations.
Dining out on a trip to Bajamar is always a treat. In particular
La Fonda Del Rio, adjacent to La Mision Hotel, the Palm Grill, located
on Km 29 of Carretera Libre, and La Palapa de Jose, below La Mision
are three of the best options.
Golfers heading south the border for a short getaway at Bajamar
can't go wrong! Sample the exciting culture of Mexico and experience
an affordable round of memorable resort golf. These simple pleasures
are what life is all about!
